People assume that a good book will sell itself, but the truth is that today's winning authors are the ones who understand how to market their books, not necessarily the ones who write well.
I do ok at some marketing activities and not so great with others, so I thought I'd try the slow slog that is traditional publishing, through publishers that actually value their authors. If it works, ok. If it doesn't, ok. It's just one path among many.
It is absolutely a viable alternative. Many authors are also beginning to sell directly to readers, through their websites and/or at live events.
Yes. I've self-published before with (generally) good results under other pen names, mostly Romance or Romantic SciFi and Fantasy.
